Video art: fact, fiction and the crisis of documentary BY TONIO NITSCHE

With her film “Last Man,” created in 2020, the multimedia artist Dana Levy asks questions about the depictability and possibility of filmic documentation, and confronts us with coming to terms with and coming to terms with the recent past.

One shot shows a neon sign with the words “Thank you to those fighting for our lives” written in large letters. But there is no one who can read this message; the streets are empty. The scene immediately brings back memories of the recent lockdown and yet something is different. It seems familiar and at the same time distant, like a cinematic dystopia; it awakens memories and at the same time fears, as if of an impending disaster.
